The oversized furniture was designed to be wrapped in builders film in emergency orange. We went to the majority of hardware stores in Christchurch and could only find it in black or clear. We adjusted the design to use blue drop sheets instead.

On the install day we went through many seasons, over a really long day. It started with rain, turned out to be really hot but as soon as the sun went down the wind was bitterly cold. But, we had a goal and we were there supporting each other we got through it.

The wind was far wilder than anyone predicted. Our rigging structure was very secure, but do be on the safe side we cut the tarp down from 1x1m to 50x50cm. We also realised that we needed to adjust our plan of just punching holes in the tarp and cable tying through that. With these winds the tarp would rip rght off. We ran around the city trying to figure out a solution. The people of Christchurch were so lovely and Dan from Admire Interiors let us borrow his eyelet die and stamp. We formed a factory line and eyeletted hundreds of peices of tarp. Thank goodness we did as the wind landed up being so strong on the first night of the festival that the procession did not happen and our installation was one of the few that was up as planned. We were so lucky to have chosen to hire our trusses and lights from Lightsite as David was so helpful and vidulant about ensuring our structure was secure.

None of us could have envisioned where this would end up when we first started throughing ideas around. While it does not resemble anyone's bridge, so many ideas behind it were influenced by the numerous projects from brief one. Most noticibly there was the impact of Jesue's game idea and Kate's archive of ordinary idea. This experience was so tiring, and so rewarding. We were lucky to have such a great group and we managed to laugh through any tough situation.

our time in Christchurch

As was expected, during our time in Christchurch many things did not go as planned. It was harder than anticipated to get people to donate tarpaulin. Maybe we did not know the right communication channels, maybe people were too attached to their tarp, maybe it was being used, or maybe discarded already? We discovered we had to buy tarp and walk around the city getting it signed. We also sent some to a school to get marked. The kids got really creative, and they turned out beautifully.
